Ben's Cat Takes On Eleven in $125,000 Maryland Million Turf
On Saturday at Laurel Park, the Maryland breeding program will be showcased for Maryland Million Day. The $125,000 Maryland Million Turf has drawn a field of twelve, including the popular Bens Cat, to compete in the one mile contest.
Ben’s Cat has been installed as the 8-5 morning line favorite and will try to avenge his narrow loss in the 2013 edition of this race. Trained by King Leatherbury, the eight-year-old son of Parker’s Storm Cat has won 27 of his 43 races, six of which have come over the Laurel Park turf. The multiple graded stakes winner has earned over $2.1 million over the course of his career and will break from post two under Julian Pimental.
Roadhog going for third consecutive Maryland Million Turf score
Second choice at morning line odds of 3-1 is Roadhog, a homebred gelded son of Bowman’s Band for Ellendale Racing. Trained by Elizabeth Merryman, the seven-year-old gelding has won the last two editions of the Maryland Million Turf. Regular rider Kendrick Carmouche will remain aboard after the pair finished second last time out in the Alphabet Soup Stakes. They will break from post nine.
Loves Last Chance stepping up to stakes competition
Also in the field and a longshot at odds of 15-1 is Loves Last Chance who will be making his stakes debut for trainer Graham Motion. The three-year-old gelding, a son of Not For Love out of the Grade 1 winning mare Tenski, has won his last two starts. While it did take him until his sixth start to break his maiden, he delivered as the favorite against allowance company last out. Trevor McCarthy will be in the irons from post seven.
